Winter Wellness Challenge

Forty-four City employees participated in the Winter Wellness Challenge, a three month challenge that included weight, cardio, flexibility, and resolution goals. Twelve of the 15 finalists were 500 club members accumulating at least 500 minutes of activity a month. Thank you to all of the Winter Wellness Challenge participants!

National Bike Month
Akron Bike Week May 14-20th 

Perfect time to ditch the car and use your bicycle for short trips and commutes. AMATS is again sponsoring Akron Bike Week to promote healthy communities through culture change and alternative transportation safety. Check out their new website switching-gears.org for all the activities of Bike week. Like last year CitiCenter AC is providing free showers for commuters during bike week.

Thursday May 17 - Market St. Bike-n-Brainstorm 6 pm at Hardesty Park Picnic Shelter, 1615 W. Market St. A 6 pm ride along the West Market Street corridor will be followed by a 7:30 pm public meeting back at the Hardesty Park picnic shelter to "brainstorm" ideas for the corridor.

City Team Currently Ranked 12th
Ohio Bike Challenge

Our City of Akron team is currently ranked 12th among Ohio workplace teams. Akron is ranked 13th in the community division. Whether you ride for exercise, errands, or to commute, take the Ohio Bike Challenge. The challenge runs from May 1 to August 30. Recording your cycling miles  is easy and can be done daily or monthly. It's not too late to sign up. The site allows you to retroactively enter your rides. Go solo, make a team or sign up for the City of Akron Team. Free Kung Fu Fitness Class

Join Nancy Gardner at Lock 3, May 19th, from 9:30am to 10:30 for a Tai Chi class with a Kick. This fun class is a fun and free way to build good health and energy. Tai Chi and Qigong is a non-medical way to boost your energy, improve your balance and help you reduce and manage stress. Stretch & Tone
FlexBand Class

Join Matt Carson at CitiCenter AC on Tuesday, May 22nd for a FlexBand flexibility warm-up session. Stop in before or after your lunch walk or exercise. FlexBand’s are a great way to stretch, strengthen, and tone your body. Two sessions will be held from 12:05-12:30p & 12:35 -1:00p. For more information, call Matt at ext. 2337.

Walk Akron!
Towpath Tuesdays

Each Tuesday during Healthy Steps, walking groups will leave the Richard Howe House at noon, 12:05 and 12:10 for a thirty minute walk while discovering downtown Akron and the Towpath Trail. See ohioeriecanal.org for details.

MetroParks award-winning hiking series begins May 1 to June 30. Earn a commemorative pin and lanyard for 5 walks on the beautiful local trails. Participate alone or with Family and Friends. See summitmetroparks.org for details.

Men’s Self Defense

Interested in participating in a men’s only self defense class with Martial Arts Hall of Fame Instructor Jeff Tyler? The class would be held at the CitiCenter AC after work for $10 on dates to be determined. Class participants will be limited. Please email or call Matt Carson, ext 2337.

Yoga with Tricia

Monday and Wednesday at noon in the CitiCenter AC 5th floor conference room. Try relaxing and revitalizing yoga with Tricia McKinney. No experience necessary. Just wear comfortable clothes and be ready for a gentle workout that will refresh body and mind. Class is free for all City employees.

  • Cardio Class - Monday-Karen & Wednesday-Carol, 12 to 12:45 pm.
  • Turbo Kick - Tuesday-Maureen, 12 to 12:45 pm. The freshest music and moves, inspired by dance, boxing and martial arts, come together to create a cardio PARTY.
  • Low Body Blast-Maureen – Thursday, 12 to 12:45 pm. Spend time toning up those" hard-to-get" areas!  Great for all fitness levels! Use body-weight exercises and sometimes even a prop or two!  Exercise mat and a towel are recommended.
  • Yoga-Cindy -Friday, 12 to 12:45 pm

Afterwork:

  • Boot Camp-Molly - Tuesday & Thursday from 4:30 to 5:30 pm. Challenge yourself with intervals of strength and cardio for a full body workout. All levels are welcome.
  • Cardio Dancing-Molly- Monday & Wednesday from 4:30 to 5:30 pm.
