Commission On Aging
The City of Akron Commission on Aging (originally Senior Citizens Commission to Mayor and City Council created in 1975) was reactivated by Mayor Horrigan and Council in 2015. The Commission is made up of older adult representatives of the city and representatives of key organizations serving adults and older adults. The Commission serves as an advocate for adults and older adults in planning, problem-solving, coordination and services. The Commission is a partner in Age Friendly Akron with Direction Home Akron Canton Area Agency on Aging, City of Akron Mayor and City Council and The University of Akron. An extensive planning process by the City and separately Summit County led to formal recognition by AARP as part of the Age Friendly national initiative for both the city and county. With the Age Friendly implementation stage, the City and County have joined together to create committees to set priorities and actions for the city and the 31 communities in Summit County.
