About us…

Water Reclamation Services is responsible for the collection, conveyance, and treatment of wastewater for the City of Akron and many neighboring communities. Our mission is to provide effective and efficient wastewater and storm water management services, while protecting the environment for this and future generations.

Major functional areas…

  • The Sewer Maintenance Division is responsible for operation and maintenance of the wastewater collection and conveyance systems including gravity sewers, regulators, pump stations, force mains, manholes, storm inlets, and responding to customer requests for assistance including odors, basement backups, displaced manhole covers, etc.
  • The Water Reclamation Facility is located in the Merriman Valley and treats approximately 75 million gallons per day (MGD) of wastewater. Peak flows to the facility can approach 280 MGD due to rain or snow melt. The facility has been in continuous operation since 1928, and utilizes the latest treatment processes and technology to safely return water back to the environment.
  • The Renewable Energy Facility, formerly the Composting Facility, is owned by the City of Akron and operated by KB Compost Services, Inc.  Approximately 175,000 gallons per day of biosolids are pumped from the Water Reclamation Facility to the nearby Renewable Energy Facility for processing.  The biosolids are anaerobically digested and dried, and the biogas generated during the process is captured and conditioned, and used to fuel a combined heat and power system capable of generating up to 1.2 MW of electricity.
