Akron, Ohio (October 17, 2013) – For the 29thconsecutive year, the City of Akron received the Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada’s (GFOA’s) Distinguished Budget Presentation Award for its 2013 budget book.  Akron’s Director of Finance, Diane L. Miller -Dawson, was also awarded a certificate of Recognition for Budget Presentation for her role in the City’s nationally recognized accomplishment.

“We have achieved national recognition for our outstanding budget presentations for the past 29 years,” noted Diane Miller-Dawson.  “I have always believed that our method of budget reporting utilizes the best practices available, and again this has been confirmed by the GFOA.”

As stated in the Press Release sent out of Washington, the award represents a significant achievement, reflecting the commitment of the governing body and staff to meeting the highest principles of governmental budgeting.

In order to receive the budget award, the City had to satisfy nationally recognized expert’s guidelines for effective budget presentation.  Akron’s budget presentation rated “proficient” in all four categories designed to assess how well an entity’s budget serves as (1) a policy document, (2) a financial plan, (3) an operations guide, and (4) a communications device, as well as “proficient” in the fourteen mandatory criteria within those categories.

“A prominent group of experts, the GFOA, which consists of financial officers throughout the United States and Canada, once again recognizes that Akron has an outstanding method of budget reporting,” said Mayor Don Plusquellic.  “I am proud of our finance department for producing, year after year, award winning budget presentations.”
