Global Youth Service Day Winners to Be Celebrated

      The City of Akron and Mayor Don Plusquellic will again honor the year’s top, young volunteers on Global Youth Service Day, April 22, 2012 at the Akron-Summit County Main Library downtown. US Bank joins the City of Akron as a host and sponsor for the event honoring some of Akron’s finest young citizens who have contributed to the more than two billion hours of volunteering given by teenagers in America. There will be a reception at 6:15 p.m. followed by the program at 6:45 p.m.

     Global Youth Service Day, the largest service event in the world, mobilizes youth to identify and address the needs of their communities through service-learning and community service.

     Recognized are some of Akron’s finest young citizens who have contributed to the more than two billion hours of volunteering by teenagers in America.

     Nominating agencies of winners will receive a cash donation in the name of the winning volunteer. The City and US Bank will present $250 donations in the name of each first place Volunteer of the Year and a contribution of $150 in the name of each second place Outstanding Volunteer.

     There are three categories (ages 12 to 13, 14 to 15, and 16 and over) with two winners per category.

This year’s Youth Service top volunteers include:

ElSer

Volunteer of the Year

(12 to 13 year old category)

Asian Service in Action, Inc.

78 Hours

ElSer was a participant in our International Community Empowerment Project (ICEP), which works with refugee and immigrant communities, promoting healthy life choices, emphasizing anti-violence, alcohol, tobacco, and drug prevention activities.

Phillip Mendoza, III

Volunteer of the Year

(14-15 years old category)

Rooted in Christ Community Church

22 Hours    

Phillip works in several capacities in the church and for our outreach ministry. He helps set up for our Easter, Christmas, and Black History programs.

Kari Rodgers

Volunteer of the Year

(16 years and older category)

Akron PeaceMakers

110 Hours

Kari leads more than 80 high school peers as co-president of the Akron PeaceMakers. She also serves on both the Mayor’s and APD Youth Advisory Committees.

 

Krystin Karpinski

Outstanding Volunteer

(12-13 years old category)

Jennings Community Learning Center

100+ Hours

Krystin, an 8th grade student, volunteers before school to help students with multiple disabilities to get from their transportation to their classrooms.

 

Imoni Knuckles

Outstanding Volunteer

(14-15 years old category)

Gennesaret, Inc.

50 Hours

The last Saturday of each month from10:30 AM to 1:00 PM, Imoni helps serve over 200 hot meals to the hungry of our community.

 

Corbin Gearhart

Outstanding Volunteer (Tie)

(16 years and older category)

Firestone High School

175+ Hours

Corbin leads a group of students in our recycling effort, collecting items every Friday from all over the school. He tutors students in chemistry from one to two hours a week.

 

Dana McKinney

Outstanding Volunteer (Tie)

(16 years and older category)

The Love Akron Network

20+ Hours

Dana, a 16 year old from Bath Township, is a super volunteer. She asked family and friends not to give her presents on her birthday. Instead, she asked them to donate gift cards or money for kids at Jennings Community Learning Center in Akron.
