City of Akron Press Release

Published: 08-30-2017

Akron, Ohio, August 29, 2017 The Ohio Department of Transportation is currently resurfacing a section of Tallmadge Avenue between the limits of Main Street and State Route 8. As part of this roadway resurfacing, a new striping plan will be implemented.

Currently, this section of Tallmadge carries four narrow lanes of through traffic, two lanes in each direction. The new plan would include one properly sized through lane in each direction, a center two way left turn lane, and bike lanes. The resurfacing is happening ahead of a full depth asphalt roadway project Akron has scheduled for 2019.

The 2019 project proposes full improvements including full depth pavement, sidewalk reconstruction as well as utility and traffic signal upgrades. The goal is to provide a safer, more efficient traffic flow for vehicles on Tallmadge Avenue, by creating a ‘right sized’ roadway, which will also allow better options for cyclists and pedestrians.

ODOT’s resurfacing project gives us a unique opportunity to study the impacts to traffic before any permanent improvements are made. This section of Tallmadge Avenue has safety issues related to turning traffic and a lot of pedestrians to consider. The addition of the two way left turn lane will allow safer movements for through traffic, and the reduction of lanes will provide traffic calming and safer pedestrian movements.

Mayor Horrigan comments, "As this section of Tallmadge carries a lot of vehicular traffic, we wanted to study the impacts to traffic delays now, to assure congestion does not increase. We will then use the real life lessons we’ve learned to make thoughtful and data-driven decisions about our plans for the area."
