Akron, Ohio (December 13, 2013) -  The City of Akron is accepting nominations for the local individual who exemplifies humanitarianism at its best to present with the 22ndannual Charles Salem Humanitarian Award. The person receiving this prestigious award will be honored at the annual Martin Luther King, Jr., program to be held on Sunday, January 19, 2013, 5:00 p.m. at Zion Apostolic Faith Church, 10 W. Tallmadge Ave., in Akron.

Charles Salem was one of the Akron’s great humanitarians.  For many years in our community Salem was an advocate for social justice and a mentor to young and old, alike.

“Charlie was a dedicated volunteer with unwavering high ethical standards,” said Mayor Don Plusquellic.  “He was a positive influence, a role model for charitable values, and a strong advocate for social justice and improved human relations for all citizens in our Greater Akron community.”

Salem chaired the City of Akron’s Human and Community Relations Commission, where his leadership is well documented.  Twenty years ago the Commission began honoring Salem’s name and good works with this award.  Today, the Mayor’s Office of Community Relations continues to honor those who, like Charles Salem, serve the Akron community over and beyond the normal, through their volunteer efforts.

When nominating someone for this esteemed honor, keep in mind Charles Salem’s outstanding community service, high ethical ideals, fairness, goodwill and friendship.  The nominee should demonstrate similar qualities in contribution to our City.  Also, the nominee’s service should not have been part of his or her job.  It must be from a purely volunteer perspective.

Deadline is Friday, January 10, 2014.  Nominations may be mailed to Billy Soule, 200 Municipal Building, 166 S. High Street, Akron, 44308, or emailed to [email protected].
