City of Akron Press Release
Published: 02-07-2018

Akron, Ohio, February 7, 2018—This evening, SWAT medics from the Akron Fire Department and tactical trainers from the Akron Police Department will be partnering with Summa Health for a training session aimed at improving the community’s response to an active shooter event.

The training deploys dynamic and realistic scenarios, using more than three dozen role players, proctors and facilitators. Summa medical staff and Akron SWAT doctors have created staged areas with simulated victims to enhance the learning experience.

“Emergency preparedness and active shooter training is more essential now than ever,” Mayor Horrigan said. “While we hope and pray that our community avoids an active shooter incident, we must be prepared for the worst case scenario. Cross-training with our community partners, like the medical team at Summa Health, will allow us to maximize safety and minimize damage in the event of an emergency.”

The City hopes to take the lessons learned from these SWAT trainings and incorporate them into the City’s general protocols for all of police, fire and EMS. Additionally, the City recently acquired new protective ballistic equipment for Akron Fire and EMS, to allow Akron’s first responders to safely and quickly access potential victims during an active shooter incident.
