City of Akron Upgrades Website

Easier to Navigate and Mobile Friendly

Akron, Ohio (April 7,  2015) – Mayor Don Plusquellic announced today that the City’s website, akronohio.gov, was optimized to be mobile friendly by using modern programming standards to detect the device used to view it.  This method of upgrading was preferred over developing a mobile application so visitors would not have to download an app.  Additionally, with the vast types of mobile devices in use, the City does not have to be concerned about app compatibility with its upgraded system.

Also, the City’s website is now more user-friendly, eliminating technical jargon with plain language search terms, and providing the most used features at the visitor’s fingertips.

“In upgrading the City’s website, we also responded to feedback from residents that wanted certain high demand pages easier to find,” said Rick Schmahl, Akron’s Chief Information Officer.   “Using analytics from visits and usage of our website, we added the “I want to” feature.  Clicking “I want to” will automatically present visitors with the navigation items most used.”

Mayor Plusquellic, who has pushed for simplicity when it comes to the City’s website, has lauded the new changes, “Our residents want to get information, make complaints, or find press releases easily.  They don’t want to have to search the website using archaic language or technical lingo in order to find what they want.”
