City of Akron Press Release
From the desk of Ellen Lander Nischt, Press Secretary
Published: 06-23-2017

Akron, Ohio, June 23, 2017– The City of Akron Good Park Golf Course invites all junior golfers, 18 years old and younger, to register for its 79th Junior Golf Tournament, being held July 5 -7 at Good Park Golf Course. “The Junior Tournament at Good Park is a beloved tradition in the Akron community and we are pleased to host the event again this year,” Mayor Dan Horrigan said of the event.

The first day’s play will qualify each player into a flight, which then becomes a two-day medal play tournament. Boys and girls will participate in their own flights, as will youngsters ages 11-12, and ages 8-10.  The entry fee is $65 and provides each player with three days of golf, prizes and lunch each day of competition. The winner of each flight will receive a trophy at the end of the tournament.

Entry forms are available at www.golfakroncity.com.  The entry deadline is Saturday, July 1.

Additionally, participants in the 79th Junior Tournament will be eligible for the Dave Barnes Memorial Scholarship, which was established in 2014 to honor the life of Dave Barnes.  Dave was a lifelong resident of Akron who began playing golf at an early age and entered his first tournament in 1966 at Good Park in what was then called the Boys Junior Tournament.  Dave graduated from Buchtel High School in 1973 and went on to play varsity golf for four years at the University of Akron.  Dave earned a 5th place finish in the 1976 NCAA II tournament, and stands alone as the only first-team All-American golfer from the University of Akron.  At the time of his passing in 2010, Dave was the general manager of Good Park Golf Course.

In the past three years, the Foundation has awarded over $22,000 in college scholarships in Dave’s honor.  This year, the Foundation will award scholarships to three college-bound senior high school players. To qualify for the Dave Barnes Memorial Scholarship, applicants must compete in the Junior Tournament, be a high school senior, be accepted into college, and have a 3.0 GPA.  Applications can be found at Good Park Golf course or questions about the scholarship can be emailed to Kristy Biasella at [email protected].
