City of Akron Press Release
Published: 06-17-2016

Akron, Ohio, June 17, 2016 – The City of Akron and Keep Akron Beautiful have forged an unprecedented partnership with Summit County Developmental Disabilities Board and the Summit County Department of Job and Family Services to keep Akron’s parks neat, clean and beautiful.

Two teams of Summit DD students, along with one job coach per team from the HELP Foundation and Hattie Larlham, will be working across the City of Akron through this 10-week work program, running through August. Participants are age 16 through 20 and have a household income at the poverty level. Federal Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) funds the program.

The teams started the park cleanup cycle on Monday, June 13, and have already cleaned the 21 city parks in Wards 1 and 2. The teams will work 25 hours a week and ensure that all parks where community events are scheduled are cleaned the day of the event, and that each park in every ward of the city is in order. In addition to litter pickup, small projects such as bench staining, painting, mulching and weeding will take place in the parks.

Mayor Dan Horrigan stated, “I’m exceedingly proud of this new partnership. The City has worked to employ summer youth in the past, but extending this important program to youth with disabilities is an important step toward a more inclusive and welcoming Akron."

Keep Akron Beautiful CEO Jacqui Ricchiuti added, “This partnership is the first of its kind in the City of Akron! The students are working hard and truly enjoying themselves, this is a winning collaboration for everyone involved.”
