City of Akron Press Release
Published: 10-07-2016

Akron, Ohio, October 6, 2016 – Mayor Dan Horrigan and Summit County Fiscal Officer Kristen M. Scalise CPA, CFE announced today that city and county pages are now live on Ohio’s Online Checkbook, as part of the Treasurer’s Transparency Project.  Citizens can follow where and how their tax dollars are being spent by visiting www.ohiocheckbook.com.  Click on the link titled “Local Government and Schools”, then select “Akron” or “Summit” in the search field.

“One of the City of Akron’s many goals for 2016 has been to showcase transparency within city government for our taxpayers and we are happy to continue meeting this objective,” said Mayor Horrigan.

“Summit County taxpayers have the right to know exactly how their money is being spent,” said Fiscal Officer Scalise.  “By joining Ohio’s Online Checkbook we are giving residents the opportunity to participate in government, ask questions and benefit from the information.  I believe they will be impressed with how responsibly the County manages tax dollars."

The online checkbook offers a glimpse at over 62,000 County expenditures from fiscal year 2015.  Visitors can sort the data in ascending or descending order by transaction date, department, vendor, description, or amount. Expenditures can be searched by a specific dollar amount or dollar increments.  Additional filters can be used to narrow a search.

Check copies can be viewed, downloaded, shared or inquired about by clicking a specific line item and selecting “view check details”. This will open a copy of the electronic check.

A variety of charts are also available to provide a graphical representation of the data.  The online checkbook will display data in a horizontal stacked chart, tree map, bar graph or pie chart. City and County spending data comes from the Banner Finance System, which is the accounting system maintained by the Summit County Fiscal Office.

“This is the first time in County history that spending records have been made available online for public viewing,” said Fiscal Officer Scalise.  “We first researched and monitored Ohio’s Online Checkbook system before committing, to ensure the technology was secure and safe for the public to access.  I’m confident this is a positive step for Summit County.”
