The State Fire Marshal’s office and the Ohio Fire Academy hosted “Feel the Heat for Ohio Public Officials” on October 25, 2014. “Feel the Heat” was established in November 1997, and provides an opportunity for public officials to learn first-hand about the challenges firefighters face on a daily basis.  Representing the City of Akron were Phil Montgomery, Deputy Director of Public Service and Akron Fire Lieutenant John Shepherd (pictured with Ohio Fire Marshal Larry Flowers).

During this daylong event, Ohio Fire Academy instructors worked closely with the public officials as they learned new skills and gained a better understanding of what it means to be a firefighter. Classroom instruction was combined with hands-on, realistic situations. Participants wore turn-out gear and used a self-contained breathing apparatus.  They then learned a variety of hose techniques and put their new skills into practice in a live burn in the Burn Building.

Deputy Service Director Phil Montgomery was very impressed with the training facility and its instructors, but was more touched by the effort it takes to live a day in the life of a firefighter, “It was very humbling to experience, even just for a day, to don the outfit and equipment, and learn just a small portion of what the men and women of the Akron Fire Department do every day to protect the lives and assets of our community. I was honored to be able to have this experience.”

The Ohio Fire Academy is the premier fire and emergency services training facility. Founded in 1978, the Reynoldsburg campus has state of the art equipment and facilities to prepare first responders at all levels from around the State of Ohio. The Academy provides an increasing amount of training “closer to home”, allowing departments to train with neighboring departments, save time and expense while increasing their skills and staying current on the latest firefighting and rescue techniques. The professional and seasoned staff of instructors holds sacred its mission to ensure that “Everyone Goes Home.”
