County Executive Russ Pry, City of Akron Mayor Don Plusquellic, and City of Canton Mayor William J. Kathleen Falk, Region V Director, U.S. Dept. of Health and Human Services, opened the press conference by reminding all citizens that the enrollment deadline for the Affordable Care Act is just one week away.  March 31st is the deadline for citizens to enroll.

County of Summit Executive Russ Pry spoke about the importance of health insurance for our youngest citizen to our oldest citizen.  He encouraged citizens to go to their local libraries to get the information needed to enroll and to utilize their computers to sign up for coverage, keeping in mind the deadline is Monday, March 31st.

City of Akron Mayor Don Plusquellic told the audience that many of Akron’s residents have had to forgo food, utilities, and other needed provisions to pay medical bills, but now with Marketplace coverage, essential health benefits and pre-existing conditions are covered. The Mayor asked residents to sign up by March 31st, the last day to enroll.

Joseph D. Varley, M.D., James and Vanita Oelschlager, Endowed Chair, Dept. of Psychiatry, Summa Hospital, spoke of the importance of good mental health and how enrolling in a plan today, can make a better life for an entire family in the future.

City of Canton Mayor William J. Healy II talked about the burden of the uninsured on our hospitals, asking citizens to sign up today.  The more citizens that sign up, the more efficient and more cost effective our hospitals will run.  Preventative health care saves dollars and lives.

Elizabeth James, Public Health Specialist, Summit County Public Health, Donna Skoda, Assistant Health Commissioner, Summit County Public Health, County Councilwoman Tamela Lee, City Councilman Richard Swirsky and Summa and Akron General Representatives were also present.

All plans in the ACA Marketplace cover essential health benefits and pre-existing conditions.  To find the latest, most accurate, information about the Marketplace, go to HealthCare.gov.  At this website, residents can learn how the marketplace works, who can apply for insurance, how to get insurance, how to lower your costs, and more.

Also, Summit County Public Health, located at 1100 Graham Road Circle in Stow, Ohio, has staff ready to assist with enrollment at their office or you can telephone in to enroll by dialing 330-926-5660.

Two events are taking place this week, Wednesday, March 26th at Summa, Internal Medicine and this Thursday, March 27th, Akron General Medical Center will hold an enrollment opportunity in the hospital’s main lobby.
