Published: 06-27-2017

Akron, Ohio, June 27, 2017 - The Akron PeaceMakers, a youth/civic leadership program of the City of Akron Mayor’s Office, is seeking new members.

"The Akron PeaceMakers Program exists to promote ‘peace in the city,’ by empowering our youth to take an active role in civic life," Mayor Horrigan said. "The program provides our young people with leadership skills, and educates them about how government, police and community organizations work together to keep our Akron neighborhoods strong and safe."

"We are looking for teens who want to take an active role in keeping Akron vibrant, and are committed to service," said Willa Keith, the program’s coordinator. "Seventeen members graduated from high school this June, and we are looking for new members to add to our team."

In the past year, PeaceMakers have provided over 5,500 hours of service to local organizations and gained national attention for their "You and the Law" campaign which provides teens with guidelines for interacting with law enforcement.

Application forms are available online at www.AkronPeaceMakers.org. Teens residing in the greater Akron area entering 9th through 12th grade this fall are eligible to apply. Two orientations are offered on July 18-21 or August 1-4. The deadline for applications is July 11th. The PeaceMakers Program is FREE to all participants.

For more information, please email [email protected] or contact Willa Keith, Program Coordinator, at 330-375-2712; or Billy Soule, Assistant to the Mayor for Community Relations, at 330-375-2660.
