Akron, Ohio - (November 10, 2014) For the 11th consecutive winter, the City of Akron will provide residents and visitors a season of outdoor fun and activities for adults and children starting Thursday, November 14th. Brand new this year is indoor Polar Putt-Putt and Breakfasts with Santa! Returning is Ohio’s largest outdoor, seasonal ice skating rink (Lock 3’s main winter attraction), The Holiday Tree Lighting Ceremony, The Santa Parade, Reindeer Run, The Holiday Market, Countdown To First Night, Saturday Pancake Breakfasts, The Magical Train, Boy Scout and Girl Scout Nights, Akron History Exhibit, and American Toy and Marble Museum, and Special Weekend Events.

THE ICE RINK: The Lock 3 ice rink opens Thursday, November 14, 2014 through Presidents Day, February 16, 2015.  Admission to the ice rink is free to everyone. Skates can be rented for $3. Skate rental closes ½ hour before rink closes. The rink will be attended Wednesdays – Sundays in December and Thursdays – Sundays in January and February. At other times, during daylight hours, skaters may use the rink at their own risk. For a list of hours of operation visit www.lock3live.com.

 

POLAR PUTT-PUTT: Visit Lock 3’s newest addition to our winter line-up. 9 holes of indoor putt-putt golf that winds through the famous classic department store animated window displays that Akronites remember from the 1960’s through the 1980’s including The 3 Little Pigs, Peter Pan, Raggedy Ann and more. Fun for all ages. $3 for 9 holes. For a list of hours of operation visit www.lock3live.com.

BREAKFAST WITH SANTA: Guests are invited to enjoy breakfast with Santa on December 6, 13, 20 and 21 from - 9:30 a.m. - 11:00 a.m. Tickets are $10 and available by calling Lock 3, or in person during regular rink hours of operation. Walk-up tickets available on a first come, first serve basis. Breakfast includes a pancake breakfast bar, a visit with Santa, a ride on the Magical Train and your choice of a skate rental, Reindeer Run voucher, or Polar Putt Putt voucher. Plenty of photo opportunities. Bring your own camera.

THE HOLIDAY TREE LIGHTING FESTIVAL: On Friday November 28th at 7 p.m. the City of Akron and Downtown Akron Partnership will light up the night sky over Lock 3. The half hour program will feature Akron’s own Jasmine Moore and United Ice; and end with the lighting of spectacular displays throughout Lock 3 and a must see pyrotechnics show.  The evening will be hosted by WONE’s Jeff Kinsbach. It is also tradition for guests to stay after the show and ice skate into the night.

THE WELCOME SANTA PARADE: On Saturday November 29th at 11 a.m. WONE’s Tim Daugherty and WQMX’s Sue Wilson will host this annual event, featuring over 100 marching units on Main St. in Downtown Akron. The City of Akron welcomes Bridgestone as the sponsor of this year’s Santa Float!

REINDEER RUN: Reindeer Run is a 150 foot, all-season polymer coated slide designed to provide a fun ride for children 14 and under. Adults may accompany smaller children on the slide. Only sleds provided by Lock 3 may be used and are rented for $3 for 30 minutes. The number of sleds available each half-hour will be limited to ensure maximum fun. THE HOLIDAY MARKET: The Holiday Market at Lock 3, sponsored by Downtown Akron Partnership features the return of Mario Hausdorfer, a glassblower from the Erzgeberge (AIRTS guh bair guh) Mountains who is well-known to Lock 3 visitors who have enjoyed his hand-blown German ornaments since 2004. Local vendors include Highland Baking Co., Homemade Delites, Kre8ivLizard/Hailoy Graphics, The Lit Wick Candle Company, Nom Nom Popcorn Co., Old German Christmas, Tindercraft, NOTO Boutique and Yellow Bugg. The market is open November 29 – December 31 on Fridays 4 p.m. – 9 p.m., Saturdays 11 a.m. – 9 p.m. and Sundays 12 p.m. – 6 p.m.

COUNTOWN TO FIRST NIGHT: A celebration in diversity and the largest community visual arts display in Northeast Ohio is Lock 3's “Countdown to First Night,” featuring 40, hand-painted banners from schools, churches, community centers, ethnic organizations and civic groups - each one illustrating an expression of the winter holiday season.  Lock 3 unveils a new banner on the State Street Parking Deck façade each evening, between Nov. 26 and First Night.

SATURDAY PANCAKE BREAKFASTS: Warm up from the frigid temperature with hot pancakes, sausage, orange juice, hot chocolate and coffee every Saturday from December 27 – February 14 from 9 a.m. – 11 a.m. Cost is $5 and benefits local charities.

THE MAGICAL TRAIN: The trackless train holds both adults and children and drives thru Lock 3. Fare is $3 for adults and children, and will run Thursdays and Fridays 6 p.m. – 9 p.m., Saturdays 1 p.m. – 9 p.m. and Sundays 1 p.m. – 6 p.m.

BOY SCOUT AND GIRL SCOUT NIGHTS: Earn your belt loops/patches for ice skating, marbles and golf. Call Lock 3 for complete information at 330-375-2877.

THE AKRON HISTORY EXHIBIT & AMERICAN TOY MARBLE MUSEUM: Home of the Blue Santa. Visitors can celebrate Akron industry from canal boat building to cereal manufacturing and agricultural implements; from rubber and tires to Lighter-than-Air displays. Engage Akron’s whimsical past at the Akron Toy Marble Museum - remembering that Lock 3 was where the American Toy Marble & Toy Manufacturing Co made marbles in the 19th century. Admission is free and is open Wednesday and Thursday 6 p.m. – 8 p.m., Friday and Saturday 12 p.m. – 8 p.m. and Sunday 12 p.m. – 4 p.m. Call 330-396-1670 for group tours and specials.

SPECIAL EVENTS: Need something to make your winter weekends a little warmer?  Stay tuned to the website for different events and activities throughout January and February.

FOOD AND BEVERAGE: The concession stand at Lock 3 offers chili, soups and other hot items to warm skating and sledding enthusiasts. Akron’s own Thirsty Dog brews are offered, including Lock 3 Lager. Coca Cola soft drinks and hot chocolate are also available.

•       Lock 3 offers stocking stuffer tickets for a skate rentals, Reindeer Run or Putt Putt. Each ticket includes a meal package and is only $6.

•       The City of Akron and Downtown Akron Partnership encourages visitors to make the most of downtown Akron. Have dinner and/or drinks at one of the over 30 restaurants and bars in downtown Akron before or after visiting Lock 3. Anyone who brings a receipt to Lock 3 will receive 1 free ice skating rental valid in January and February. (1 free skate rental/receipt).

•       Guests can park free on State St. and Cascade parking decks for free after 6 p.m. on weekdays and all day on weekends.
