Published: 11-18-2016

Akron, Ohio, November 18, 2016 – The City of Akron invites and encourages residents to attend the first “Akron Community Sports Day” open house event being held this Saturday, November 19, 2016 in the new Firestone High School gymnasium from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m.

The event is being hosted by Echelon Media Sports in collaboration with the City of Akron and Akron Public Schools with sponsorship from Summa Health System. The event will act as the kick-off event for the City’s intramural Youth Basketball League, and will feature basketball skills stations, freebies, and sports/health vendors.  The event will also showcase speakers designed to promote nutrition, mental health, financial literacy, and a healthy lifestyle for young people by addressing topics from bullying to self-improvement.  The goal of the event is to help reduce violence and drug use in our community by promoting education and providing resources, inspiration, and information needed to make healthy decisions.

Youth age 8-17 and their parents, coaches, and teachers are encouraged to attend. Two current Cleveland Browns players will serve as host speakers, along with a guest appearance by a member of the Cleveland Cavaliers.  These athletes will talk about their professional careers and give advice to kids about how to stay healthy and be successful.
