City of Akron Press Release
From the desk of Ellen Lander Nischt, Press Secretary
Published: 10-04-2017

Akron, Ohio, October 4, 2017 This week, Mayor Dan Horrigan presented four local charities with donations totaling over $20,000, that were raised from proceeds at four WONE Rock the Lock events this summer.

Next door to the Akron Civic Theatre, and home to the Akron Children’s Museum, Lock 3 is the center of family-friendly entertainment in Akron. From May through September, Lock 3 features weekend concerts under the open skies of downtown Akron.

Akron's largest festivals, a large number of community events and the City’s official 4th of July fireworks display take place at Lock 3 each summer. In the winter, Lock 3 is home to the largest seasonal outdoor ice staking rink in the state of Ohio, along with the Reindeer Run sledding hill, and many other family-friendly attractions.

“Since 2003, millions of dollars have been raised by charities that have used Lock 3 as the venue for their fundraisers. This year, we decided to go a step further and do even more to support local charities that are making a big impact in our community,” Mayor Horrigan said of the motivation for the Give Back Friday events.  “We are proud to be donating over $5,000 to each of these local organizations to support the important work they are doing in our community.”

This summer, Lock 3 charged a $5 entry fee for four of the WONE Rock the Lock - Give Back Friday events on Friday nights and raised in excess of $20,000 in support of four local charities:

  • Project GRAD – an education-based initiative that provides programs, support, and scholarships to help at-risk students overcome economic disadvantages and achieve success from kindergarten through career.
  • Cascade Community Development, Inc. – a non-profit that supports veterans and adult learning programs for seniors.
  • S.W.A.G. (Students With A Goal) – an after-school mentoring program that helps middle and high school students develop and reach positive goals.
  • The One-In-Six Foundation – a local non-profit that promotes awareness of prostate cancer and supports funding for early stage research.
