Akron, Ohio, April 26, 2016– The Arbor Day Foundation has named the City of Akron a 2015 Tree City USA in honor of the city’s commitment to effective urban forest management.

Akron achieved Tree City USA recognition by meeting the program’s four requirements: a tree board or department, a tree-care ordinance, an annual community forestry budget of at least $2 per capita and an Arbor Day observance and proclamation.

Started in 1976, the Tree City USA program, sponsored by the Arbor Day Foundation, in partnership with the U.S. Forest Service and the National Association of State Foresters is celebrating its 40th Anniversary this year.

“Tree City USA communities see the impact an urban forest has in a community first hand,” said Dan Lambe, President of the Arbor Day Foundation. Additionally, recognition brings residents together and creates a sense of community pride, whether it’s through volunteer engagement of public education.”

“The City of Akron is excited to be recognized as a Tree City USA. We will continue our efforts to maintain the more than 55,000 street trees within the city as we promote the positive effects trees have on our neighborhoods, environment and wildlife,” added Mayor Dan Horrigan.

In 2015 Akron planted 2,281 trees and 3,192 seedlings. Additionally, the city pruned 3,426 trees as part of the community forestry program.

The Arbor Day Foundation is a million member nonprofit conservation and education organization with the mission to inspire people to plant, nurture, and celebrate trees. To learn more about the Tree City USA program, visit www.arborday.org/TreeCityUSA.
