City of Akron Press Release

Akron, Ohio, Sept. 1, 2016 – The Ohio EPA has approved a Water Pollution Control Loan Fund (WPCLF) Nutrient Reduction Discount for the loan to finance the construction of the Step Feed Phase 2 project at the City of Akron’s Water Reclamation Facility. The City was awarded a reduced interest rate that will result in a savings of $18.7 million dollars. The project is part of the City’s Akron Waterways Renewed (AWR) program to control combined Sewer Overflows (CSO) and update the city’s sewer infrastructure, and the integrated plan to provide more water quality benefits sooner.

“Our ongoing objective is to find ways to reduce the overall cost of the sewer projects. I am always pleased at the diligence put forth by the city’s Engineering Bureau to help make this happen. Each day they look for new ways to improve our AWR program with the goal to reduce the burden on our ratepayers. For Akron to compete and receive one of these loans is outstanding. These savings would not have happened without the Bureau’s efforts,” said Mayor Dan Horrigan.

During the 2016 program year, the WRF-Step-Feed Phase 2 project at the Water Reclamation Facility will increase the secondary treatment capacity of the plant and reduce secondary treatment bypasses during wet weather events which will lower the annual nutrient loading in the Cuyahoga River.
