Akron, Ohio, April 19, 2017 – Mayor Dan Horrigan’s 2017 State of the City Address raised close to $12,000 this past February, thanks to the generosity of sponsors, guests and donors. Since announcing the date for his annual address, Mayor Horrigan’s vision was to use the proceeds to provide a scholarship for a graduate of a high school within Summit County who has a demonstrated a deep commitment to community service.
“I’m thrilled at the response from the community to help establish this scholarship. Russ was a friend and mentor to so many of us and a committed public servant, especially when it came to education. I truly hope this scholarship honors his legacy for decades to come,” Mayor Horrigan said.
Through a generous gift of $50,000 from the Friends of Russ Pry, the scholarship was endowed and is being held by the University of Akron Foundation. This community collaborative effort allowed for the scholarship to quickly take root and be awarded this fall academic year.
“On behalf of the employees of the County of Summit, the Friends of Russ Pry, and everyone who knew and loved Russ, I would like to thank everyone who contributed to the State of the City event in Russ's honor," said Summit County Executive Ilene Shapiro. "This is a great opportunity for the young people of Summit County who are looking to go to law school and share in Russ's faith in community service and involvement."
Additional financial support to make this scholarship a reality came from sponsors: the County of Summit, Akron/Summit Convention & Visitors Bureau, Brennan, Manna and Diamond, Akron Children’s Hospital, Cleveland Clinic/Akron General, Direction Home, Goodyear, GPD Group, Kent State University, The LeBron James Family Foundation, PNC Bank, Stark State College-Akron, State & Federal Communications, Summa Health, The University of Akron, The University of Akron School of Law, Kiwanis Club of Akron, Rotary Club of Akron, Ohio, Akron Roundtable, Greater Akron Chamber, Greenleaf Family Center, Leadership Akron and Pritt Entertainment Group.
