Now is the time for companies to apply for the 3rd  Annual Summit of Sustainability Awards, a program that will showcase the best examples of commercial energy efficiency, waste reduction and employee participation.

The Summit of Sustainability Awards program will culminate in a “zero-waste” breakfast on Thursday, October 23, 2014, at The University of Akron’s Quaker Station, showcasing the five winners.  Applications for the awards are due by July 25, 2014.  Companies seeking to apply must be located within Summit County.  Applications and more information are online at www.SummitOfSustainability.org.

GOJO Industries was the winner in the Large Company category last year.

“It was an honor to be selected for the Summit of Sustainability Award in 2013,” said Nicole Koharik, GOJO Global Sustainability Marketing Director.  “The recognition of SOSA has provided GOJO with the opportunity to network and learn from other individuals and organizations who share our strong commitment to sustainability.  Moreover, GOJO has shared our knowledge with others passionate about advancing and improving social, environmental and economic sustainability.  We know that sustainability is an ongoing journey and the more education we can gain from each other, the better for people and our planet.”

This year’s program will feature a keynote presentation from Graham Russell, a sustainable business professional and sustainability consultant. He brings 25 years of CEO experience in helping small to mid-sized companies in the environmental services and transportation industries understand how a strategy based on the principles of sustainability drives innovation, competitive advantage, job creation and improved financial performance.

Through TrupointAdvisors he provides consulting services to companies wishing to develop and implement a sustainability-based strategy, as well as strategic marketing and planning services to companies in the environmental services and cleantech industries with a focus on waste elimination and water-related services.

Russell currently directs an MBA course in sustainable business at the University of Colorado, Denver, Business School, and chairs the School’s Managing for Sustainability Advisory Council. He is a frequent writer and speaker on the subject of the benefits of sustainability-based strategies and co-author of "A Simple Path to Sustainability - Green Business Strategies for Small and Medium-Sized Businesses". He is a Board Member of the International Society for Sustainability Professionals.

“I think our local business and community leaders are truly working to be sustainable on some level,” noted Mayor Don Plusquellic.  “The Summit of Sustainability Awards Program tries to ramp-up local participation by recognizing the ‘best of the best’ in sustainable companies, non-profits, and government entities. It reminds us all that we need to constantly be thinking about how our actions today will affect future generations.”

Competing entities can apply in one of five categories: Small Business (25 employees or less), Medium Business (26 to 249 employees), Large Business (250 employees or more), Non-Profit/Community, and Public Sector (Governmental/Schools).

The Founding Members of the Summit of Sustainability Awards program are the City of Akron, County of Summit, Keep Akron Beautiful, Greater Akron Chamber of Commerce and ReWorks, formerly known as the Summit Akron Solid Waste Management Authority.  Many generous sponsors have also stepped forward to launch this awards program that will provide local sustainable best practices and mentors for businesses as the community works together to be more responsible stewards of its shared environment.

“Throughout Summit County there are many companies and organizations involved in programs and initiatives to improve environmental, social and economic sustainability,” said Summit County Executive Russ Pry. “The Summit of Sustainability Awards Program brings awareness to these efforts and recognizes their benefits.”
