City of Akron Press Release
From the desk of Ellen Lander Nischt
Published: 05-16-2017

Akron, Ohio, May 16, 2017 – This summer, the City of Akron will be reconfiguring the intersection of Kenilworth Drive, Elmdale Avenue and West Market Street, as part of the West Market Street Signalization Project (SUM 18 – Hawkins to Portage Path). The existing intersection is offset and utilizes a splitter island on Elmdale Avenue and two separate traffic signals to direct traffic.

“The unusual configuration at this intersection creates operational issues and can be confusing to motorists unfamiliar with the area,” Mayor Horrigan said of the project. “The proposed improvement will realign Elmdale and Kenilworth to create a more traditional intersection, which will eliminate the need for one traffic signal at this location and reduce traffic congestion.”

Also a right turn lane will be added for east bound traffic on Market Street onto Elmdale Avenue. Additional improvements include roadway and sidewalk reconstruction along with new traffic signal equipment. Construction is expected to begin July 2017 and finish by September 2017.

Questions, comments, and concerns about the West Market Street Signalization Project (SUM 18 – Hawkins to Portage Path) may be sent by June 15, 2017 to Christine Jonke via email to [email protected] or they can be mailed to:
