Akron, Ohio, October 13, 2017 - This morning, at approximately 6 AM, a fire occurred in a storage area in the basement of Summa’s St. Thomas campus in Akron, impacting both Summa Health and Crystal Clinic Orthopedic Center (CCOC) patients. The Akron Fire Department was dispatched to the scene; and patients and staff were evacuated from the building. Many St. Thomas patients were transferred to other local Summa facilities. The County Emergency Operations Center (EOC) was activated to assist with coordination of patient transportation, which involved assistance from METRO Regional Transit Authority (Metro) and American Medical Response (AMR).
The cause of the fire is currently being investigated by the Akron Fire Department. Summa has established a patient hotline for friends and family of Summa St. Thomas patients at 330-375-7702. CCOC has established a patient hotline for friends and family of CCOC St. Thomas patients at 330-668-4486.

We extend our gratitude to the men and women of the Akron Fire Department for their rapid response and their diligent efforts to quickly contain and extinguish this fire. We are also grateful to the Akron Police Department, the physicians and staff of St. Thomas Hospital, the Summit County EOC, METRO and AMR for their assistance in coordinating an organized, compassionate, and professional response for all patients and staff impacted.
The safety of patients, staff, first responders and the public is of the greatest importance. We are very thankful that no injuries have been reported as a result of this incident. Our hospital staff, first responders, and community partners are well-trained and prepared for these situations, and they effectively implemented the appropriate protocols to maximize safety and minimize any damage.
The Akron Fire Department will conduct a thorough investigation into the cause of this fire and release the results of that investigation once completed.
