Fire Safety Information
Smoke Detectors
- In 1990, Akron passed a law requiring smoke detectors in all dwellings.
- Install a smoke detector on each level of your home and outside the bedroom area.
- Test the alarm at least once a month.
- When you change your clock, change your smoke detector batteries.
- Do you have a child that plays with matches, lighters, or FIRE?
Smoke Detector Tips
Smoke detectors, if installed and serviced properly, can double
your chances of surviving a fire.
The following list of tips is by no means complete but simply meant to
be a guide to help ensure your safety.
- Batteries in smoke detectors should be changed twice a year. A good way to remember this
is to change your smoke detector batteries when you change the time on your clocks in the
spring and fall.
- Smoke detectors that are wired directly to the home’s electrical system need to
have battery back-up. If they don’t, install a battery operated detector in the area
of the hardwired detector.
- Smoke detectors should be inspected, and tested monthly.
- Smoke detectors should cleaned yearly.
- Since heat and smoke rise, it’s best to place your detectors on the ceiling;
however, avoid anything that would obstruct airflow ( i.e. corners, ceiling fans and
vents).
- Remember, smoke detectors have a limited life span and the entire unit needs to be
replaced every 10 years.

- The Akron Fire Department and Children's Hospital Medical Center of Akron operate the
Juvenile Firestopper and Burn Awareness Program.
- These Educational Prevention classes are conducted in evenings and are free of charge.

Home Fire Escape Plan
- Prepare an escape plan for your home.
- Install and maintain smoke detectors.
- Practice your plan regularly.
- Have a designated meeting place outside your home.
- When you get out, STAY OUT.
Public Education Office
- Available for talks or demonstrations on fire safety.
- Teach Juvenile Firestoppers classes.
- Call for information on Akron's new fire safety house.
- Elementary School Children's Calendar contest.
- Held each year in Akron Public Elementary Schools.
- Contestants draw a fire safety picture, 12 winners are chosen for a calendar. Prizes are
donated by area businesses.
- Office hours are 7:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. Monday - Friday.

Aluminum Cans for Burned Children (ACBC)
- ACBC is a special aluminum can recycling program conducted by local firefighters.

- ACBC is designed to help ease the suffering and speed the recovery of young burn victims
coping with the devastating physical and psychological effects of their injuries. Funds
earned by recycling are used to purchase non-medical essentials such as protective
clothing, rehabilitative equipment, camouflage cosmetics, toys and other items not covered
by insurance. Spending decisions are made by a volunteer board of directors comprised of
fire fighters, hospital personnel and business persons.
- ACBC is benefited by children (all burn victims) treated at Children's Hospital Medical
Center and other hospitals in areas where cans are collected.
- ACBC is simple ... residents can donate empty beverage cans participating fire stations
and Fire Fighters do the rest of the work.
