Employee Benefits

The City of Akron offers a comprehensive employee benefits package to its 2400 employees and 2300 retirees and their eligible dependents. The Employee Benefits Division administers the group health insurance plans, worker's compensation, unemployment compensation, retirement and leave programs.

Responsibilities Include:

Group Health Insurance Plans

  • Plans and administers medical, dental, vision and prescription benefit plans
  • Coordinates claims processing with insurance carriers
  • Enrolls new eligible employees and dependents and maintains eligibility systems
  • Medical case management in cooperation with IntraCorp
  • Processes invoices for payment of claims and administrative fees
  • Administers Medical Bill Audit Program
  • HIPAA Compliance
  • COBRA Administration

Worker's Compensation

  • Processes and files medical only and lost time claims with the BWC
  • Maintains records for all claims
  • Represents or coordinates representation at Industrial Commission hearings
  • In cooperation with the Law Department, evaluates lump sum settlements of claims

Unemployment Compensation

  • Processes Ohio Bureau of Employment Services information requests
  • Represents or coordinates representation at hearings before the Board of Review
  • Maintains claims records

Retirement Programs (OPERS and OPFPF)

  • Processes new employee personnel history records to begin contributions
  • Processes applications for refunds of contributions
  • Assists employees in purchasing prior public service
  • Provides counseling and case preparation for prospective service and disability retirements
  • Maintains retirement records

Leave Programs

  • Disability Case Management
  • Transitional Work Policy Administration
  • Injury and Worker's Compensation leaves management
  • Family and Medical Leave Act administration
  • Americans with Disabilities Act reasonable accommodations

Safety Management

  • OSHA Report
  • Assist departments with BWC and PERRP interventions
